CHAPTER FOURTEEN

SARAH WATCHED IN surprise as Gram tottered onto the screen.

“Oh, hello, Roarke,” she said warmly.

“What are you doing here, Gram?” Roarke asked her, his wings flicking sharply in agitation. Sarah watched the short jerks of his wings as they moved and could see him rein in his frustration in order to be kind to Gram.

“I do believe I’ve lost my way,” Gram said, sounding frail and upset. Immediately Sarah knew this was part of the test. Her Gram would wander for hours and still not ask for help. She was entirely too stubborn to plaintively cry out ‘help’ for someone.

“What a load of horse shit,” Taylor muttered next to Sarah. Beth giggled as Sarah nodded her agreement.

“I wanted to check on my poor Sarah, but no one would let me,” Gram continued, voice quavering as though she was choked up. “She needs her Gram.”

Roarke wavered in the hallway, moving from the tips of his toes back to his heels repeatedly, obviously forcing himself to stand still.

“You’re not supposed to be here, interfering in the Questioning,” he said uncertainly. “You could get in trouble. Why don’t you go back to my mom, Gram? She’ll help you find Sarah when you’re allowed to be with her.”

“I’m not even sure how to get back the way I came,” Gram sniffled behind her hands, peeking up to see Roarke’s reaction with some very poor acting. It was a miracle Roarke believed her at all and that belief could only be from his agitation at the circumstances.

A multitude of expressions crossed Roarke’s face before resignation showed through clearly and firmly.

“I’ll take you back, Gram,” he responded, tamping down on a sigh. He looked at the door with the sun on it. “If we could move quickly, I’d appreciate it. I’d like to still have a chance at round two for Sarah.”

He walked towards Gram and when he made it next to her, she reached up and touched his cheek.

“What a good boy,” she said with a genuine, warm smile. “This was round two. When the queen mentioned that family was one of Sarah’s most important character traits, I insisted that I be a part of the round. Pretty good, right? They wanted to use magic, but I knew some of you would guess that. It needed to be me, the real me, here. Anyway, go on into the sunshine room, you’ve passed. I’m supposed to tell you it’ll be a bit before round three starts, so to help yourself to some lunch when you get hungry. Others will be joining you as they pass round two.”

Roarke’s face broke out in a beaming smile.

“You’re a wily one, Gram, that’s for sure,” Roarke replied, shaking his head. “I should have guessed. I really should have guessed.”

“I’m too good of an actress,” she answered, causing Sarah, Taylor, and Beth all to chuckle. “Back in my day, I was quite the beauty, too. I could have been an actress.”

“You’re still quite the beauty,” Roarke said as he turned towards the door.
